Abstract
If dental hygiene is to survive in university settings, faculty must demonstrate scholarship and research productivity comparable to other university faculty. Academicians who have advanced theoretical preparation in either the biological or social sciences and the research skills will be required to develop new combinations of dental hygiene knowledge and practice. Through their research efforts, a body of knowledge “unique” to dental hygiene could be developed. Only then would the direction of dental hygiene be influenced by internal, rather than external, pressures.
