Expanding rapid HIV testing in the dental setting may increase the number of individuals who are aware of their HIV status and can begin medical care and social support services if seropositive and appropriate. As a member of the dental team, the dental hygienist, with the proper knowledge and training, may be suitable to conduct rapid HIV testing. This study supports the NDHRA priority area, Health Services Research: Assess the impact of dental hygiene services on the outcomes of care for patients with special needs.
